From the first Tuesday in October, CADAC hire the Sports Hall at the Gilberd School to shoot over short indoor distances, one evening a week.
The session runs from 19:30 to 22:30, but often concludes before 22:00. Archers can leave at any time, as we appreciate that people with younger children and work commitments etc. may need to. But we’d ask that an effort is made to take down your boss and stand before you go.
All members are welcome to attend, there’s no further fee as it’s included in your membership.

Directions
The school car park is accessed from the roundabout at Brinkley Grove Road, Brinkley Lane.
Follow the road around the school and park in the main car park.
The entrance to the sports hall is currently in past the Leisure World reception.
Archers generally gather here from just before 19:30 – although it’s worth remembering that we only have the hall from 19:30 onwards and there are other users in the hall before us. We need to allow time for them to clear the hall
The doors will be locked once the hall is set up and everyone is ready to shoot, so it pays to be on time.
All members are expected to pitch in to set up the sports hall so the session will run smoothly. We have to string backstop netting and set up targets before shooting.
Space is limited in the hall, so there’s only a shooting line, but all other aspects of shooting are followed:
– One whistle to shoot.
– Three whistles to collect.
Unlike outdoor shooting, when indoors we shoot only 3 arrows per end.
( shooting a Worcester round is notably different ).
Imperial rounds are shot over 20 yards and metric rounds over 18 meters.
If necessary we will shoot two details of archers indoors, where half of the archers will shoot their 3 arrows and then retire from the shooting line. The other half will then shoot their arrows. This will be announced at the beginning of each session, if necessary.
CADAC enters various indoor & postal competitions over the winter and although archers may shoot rounds as they wish, we dedicate the following evenings to shooting rounds for those competitions:
1st Tuesday Bray ( 30 arrows/10 ends )
2nd Tuesday Bray ( 30 arrows/10 ends )
3rd Tuesday Portsmouth ( 60 arrows/20 ends )
4th/5th Tuesday Free practice.
However, you may see members practising for other rounds on any evening, especially for upcoming competitions etc.
There are various other indoor rounds available to shoot other common examples:
Worcester – 20yards – 5 arrows per end
WA18 – 18 meters – metric scoring
During evenings when we shoot a Bray round, there’s normally time to shoot two rounds in each session.
At the end of the session we, again, rely on the membership to pack up the equipment and get it back to the store. Indoor shooting allows us to continue to practice and compete through the colder/wetter months without having to brave the elements. It’s also a great opportunity to meet/shoot with other archers.
Our Colchester Sports Park outdoor facilities remain available as normal to members during the Winter months.
