Bill Tucker

The Colchester and District Archery Club (CADAC) have hosted an annual Open Tournament in memory of our founder – William (Bill) Tucker – since 2004 – with a 3-year break [2020 to 2022] due to the COVID pandemic and because of the move to our new shooting ground. We will once again host the Bill Tucker Memorial shoot, on Sunday 12th May 2024 at our Colchester Sports Park home ground. We offer York, Hereford and Western rounds to be shot by archers of all ages and proficiencies.

William (Bill) Ernest Tucker MBE (1979) lent his enthusiasm to form the ‘Essex County Archery Association‘ in 1951. In July 1954, he went on to form our club – the Colchester and District Archery Club, and the Essex Bowmen. Bill and his wife Betty, contributed much to Essex Archery, and as an example of his dedication to the sport, Bill was known to hand paint the targets used at the Colchester Field Shoots.

Bill was still working for the Colchester Evening Gazette at the age of 89. Bill’s contributions to Essex and the Town of Colchester were recognised when he was awarded the Honorary Freedom of Colchester on the 6th March 1996. Sadly, Bill passed away on the 14th April 2002.

The first Memorial shoot in Bill’s honour was held in 2004.
